How to Split a PDF
Everything you need to divide a PDF into smaller files — with no software, no account and no uploads.
Split PDF NowWhat does splitting a PDF mean?
Splitting a PDF means creating one or more new documents from the pages of an existing one. A PDF is a container: each page is a self-contained object with its own text, fonts and images, plus references to shared resources. A splitter copies the objects belonging to the pages you chose into a fresh container and writes it out as a new file. Because the page content is copied rather than re-rendered, the result is visually identical to the source — the text is still selectable and searchable, and images are not recompressed.
Splitting is different from a few operations that are often confused with it. Deleting pages produces one smaller document instead of several. Compressing shrinks the file size by re-encoding images. Merging does the reverse of splitting. And converting to images turns pages into PNG or JPEG files, which loses the text layer. If what you want is "give me these pages as their own PDF", splitting is the right operation.
How to split a PDF online
- Open the Split PDF tool.
- Drag your file into the drop area, or click Select PDF and choose it.
- Read the page count shown under the file name — it tells you the valid page numbers.
- Enter the pages or ranges you want, separated by commas, for example
1-3, 5, 8-10. - Click Split PDF.
- Download each file, or take the whole set as a ZIP archive.
The whole process usually takes a few seconds. If you mistype a range — for example a page number higher than the document has — the tool tells you instead of producing a broken file, and you can correct the input and try again.
How to extract specific pages
When you only need a few pages, list them individually. Each comma-separated entry becomes a separate output file, so 2, 5, 8-10 gives you page-2.pdf, page-5.pdf and pages-8-10.pdf. This is the fastest way to send one signed page of a contract, a single invoice from a statement bundle, or the two pages an agency asked for. Use our free PDF page extractor to save only the pages you need.
How to split every page
Some documents are really a stack of independent pages: scanned receipts, certificates, tickets, shipping labels. In that case you want one file per page rather than a selection. Open Split PDF into Individual Pages, choose the file and press Split Every Page. A 10-page PDF becomes page-1.pdf through page-10.pdf, and the ZIP download saves you from clicking ten times.
Example
Say you have a 10-page report and three colleagues each need a different section. Open the split-by-range page and enter:
1-3, 4-7, 8-10
You get pages-1-3.pdf (the summary), pages-4-7.pdf (the analysis) and pages-8-10.pdf (the appendix). Each file opens on its own, and the original report is unchanged on your disk.
Is it safe to split PDFs online?
It depends entirely on where the processing happens. Many online converters upload your document to a server, process it there and delete it later according to their own policy. For a public brochure that is fine; for a contract, a payslip or a medical record it means handing a copy to a third party.
This tool avoids the question by never sending the file anywhere. The PDF is read by JavaScript inside your browser tab, the new documents are built in memory, and the download links point at that in-memory data. Closing the tab discards it. You can verify this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and split a file — no request carrying the document is made. Our privacy page describes the same thing in plain language.
Two practical notes. First, a split file is no more protected than the original, so treat the output as sensitive if the input was. Second, encrypted PDFs cannot be read until the password is removed — save an unlocked copy first.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I split a PDF without software?
- Use a browser-based splitter like this one. The page loads a PDF library into the tab, so the file is processed on your computer and nothing is installed.
- Can I split a password-protected PDF?
- Not directly. Encrypted files cannot be read until the password is removed, so open the document in a PDF reader, save an unprotected copy, and split that.
- Will splitting reduce the quality of my PDF?
- No. Pages are copied as they are, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution.
- Does splitting change the original file?
- No. The source PDF on your disk is untouched; the tool only creates new files from a copy held in memory.
- How do I split a PDF on a phone?
- Open this page in your mobile browser, pick the PDF from your files or cloud storage app, enter the pages and download the results to your device.
- How many pages can I split at once?
- As many as your device can hold in memory. There is no server limit because the file is never uploaded.
